Akumal Centro

Aerial Photograph taken in June of 2010. Only modest development in 10 years.
Akumal Centro is between North Akumal to the north and Jade Bay to the south. This section is the heart of Akumal commercial and social life. It's located in a sweeping bay with a gorgeous sandy beach. The waves break several hundred meters off shore over the Meso American reef system - the second longest reef system behind the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The waves breaking offshore create a calm bay which is world famous as a snorkeling destination to swim with turtles. In fact, "Akumal" in the Maya language means "place of the turtles".
Akumal Centro is best traversed by walking, golf cart or bicycle. Restaurants, watering holes, souvenir shopping, grocery stores and other vistor amenities are a barefoot walk away. There's a lot to do and see in the serene environment with captivating views of the Caribbean. Spend your day relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving or take a stroll. Akumal Centro has it all and it's all within a 5 minute walk.
