THE ROMERO ESTATE
This private, gated estate of houses will provide you, your family, friends, and staff with all of the comfort, security, and seclusion that you desire. Set in a lush garden of bougainvillea and hibiscus, with approximately 15,000 square feet (1,400 square meters) of indoor and outdoor living space, the Romero Estate has all the space that you will want.
The Romero Estate is at the extreme end of the residential community of North Akumal featuring magnificent views of Yal Ku lagoon, the jungle, and the Caribbean. The original owner was a good friend of the founder of Akumal and had his choice of locations. The first house built near the lagoon, he chose well with the prime location in all of Akumal where the Yal Ku lagoon turns to join the Caribbean. With 460 feet (140 meters) of waterfront, the views are truly breathtaking.
The main house, built in 1976 is beautifully appointed with carefully selected marble, stone, tile floors, hand stenciled motifs, and artwork including Mexican traditional folk art and unique art pieces collected throughout the world.
Centered on the magnificent original Villa, Casa Romero, and featuring four luxurious “townhouses” for family and friends, this is the escape location that cannot be duplicated.
CASA ROMERO:
Enter the main villa, Casa Romero, with its marble entryway and large patio doors leading to the outdoor patio, the infinity pool, the tiled hot tub along with the natural beauty of Yal Ku lagoon and you will know that you have entered a special place.
The main living room features a vaulted ceiling with both a comfortable siting area for conversations and relaxation as well as a separate area for TV viewing. Floor to ceiling doors and windows open to tropical plants, a vista of green lawn and a paths leading to one of the two private entrances to the lagoon.
The formal dining room features great cross-ventilation and custom furniture including a large table and ten chairs.
The fully equipped modern kitchen includes custom cedar cabinets made in the Yucatan, granite counters, and stainless steel appliances. With an adjacent pantry for food storage, your chef will enjoy preparing your meals.
There are three bedrooms in the main villa:
The ground floor bedroom has a king bed, walk-in closet, large bathroom, and private patio. Since the stairs are wooden and spiral, it is ideal for anyone who has trouble with stairs.
The second floor “pink room” has both a queen bed and a double bed which also serves as a seating area overlooking the lagoon. It has its own full bath and an outside terrace with private steps to the ground level.
The master bedroom has floor to ceiling windows which provide an amazing panoramic view – a joy to wake up to and spectacular all day long. With its king size bed and secluded reading nook, you may find it tempting to just lie down or sit and watch nature unfold in front of you. The pink Carrara marble bathroom includes a jetted bathtub with a large picture window looking out towards the Caribbean, a rain shower, and double stone vessel sinks on a fifteen foot long tiled counter with drawers below.
Unique to all of Akumal, the house has a high observation tower with a 270 degree panoramic view of the lagoon, the jungle, and the Caribbean. At night you can see the lights of Cozumel Island off the coast. Always with a cool breeze and amazing sites, here you can relax with your morning coffee or you can share the view with friends over afternoon cocktails.
The house also has a full laundry and a half bath off of the main entryway.
Fully air conditioned, each room has its own AC controls although you may find that you normally prefer the sea breezes and fresh air with cross-ventilation. The living room, dining room, and upstairs bedrooms have native Mexican stone floors.
THE TOWNHOUSES:
You don't need to relegate family and friends to a “guest room”. Here you will have four luxurious “townhouses” instead. All with similar floor plans, each has been uniquely decorated with careful coordination within each room.
As you come under one of the three stone arches into the Estate courtyard area with the central water fountain, the two French Angel townhouses are to the left of the main villa and the two Blue Tang townhouses are to the right. Each is a 2-story fully air conditioned townhouse with two bedrooms.
Downstairs, each townhouse features an open floor plan with a fully equipped kitchen, living room, dining area and half bath.
The living areas have comfortable built-in sofas and chairs for conversations or watching TV.
- The dining areas include custom built cedar tables and chairs for six.
- The fully equipped kitchens feature granite counter tops, gas stoves, lots of cupboard space, and refrigerator/freezers with ice and cold water from purified water.
- Both the living areas and dining areas have large patio doors which open onto an outdoor patio overlooking the lagoon.
- There is a half bathroom between the kitchen and dining area
- There is a laundry room off of the kitchen with washer and dryer
In each house, the two bedroom suites are located on the second floor overlooking the lagoon.
In the French Angel townhouses, one bedroom has a king bed while the other has two double beds. These are ideal for small families with children.
- In the Blue Tang townhouses, both bedrooms have king beds.
- Each bedroom suite has its own AC controls and great cross-ventilation.
- Each bedroom suite has a full bathroom including rain shower.
- Each townhouse, built in 2007 also has its own rooftop area with a magnificent view of the lagoon and the jungle beyond to be enjoyed under the shade or the roof top pool.
- The rooftop area includes a concrete sun shade for relaxing and reading while enjoying the view and the breeze without the sun.
- For sun worshipers, there is also an open area for enjoying the sun.
- Best of all, each rooftop has its own heated roof top pool (approximately 12ft x 15ft or 3m x 4m): perfect for cooling off during the day or for children and the perfect location for star gazing at night.
- Each townhouse also has a full laundry area with washer and dryer and a downstairs half bath.
ESTATE AMENITIES:
You may want to just escape, but you or some of your guests may want to "stay connected". Casa Romero and each townhouse has a flat screen television with DVD and satellite with US content with all of the major cable networks including ESPN and HBO.
The Estate includes an extensive Wi-Fi network with two internet providers to ensure uninterrupted connectivity even if the primary provider is down. From the internet connection, each house also has (VOIP) telephone service.
The Estate has two private entrances to Yal Ku lagoon – one with hand-rails leading towards the magnificent snorkeling. Since the lagoon has no waves you will find it perfect for both experienced and beginner snorkelers. Recommended while snorkeling, the Estate has vests available in a variety of sizes from young children to adults.
The second entrance is over a sandy inlet leading to a shallow area that is ideal for young children who enjoy playing in the shallows as well as experienced swimmers who want to swim out to the rocky islands at the mouth of the lagoon meeting with the Caribbean.
YAL KU LAGOON:
A true national treasure, Yal Ku Lagoon is one of the ecological highlights of the Yucatan peninsula. Here, where the underground rivers meet the Caribbean, the caves and mangrove create a perfect nursery for small fish so the lagoon is filled with dozens of species of tropical fish year round.
Perhaps the best place for novice snorkelers, and a treasure for experienced snorkelers, the fish in the lagoon include schools of Blue Tang and Seargent Major fish, three species of Angel fish, many varieties of Parrot fish and many more other species – keep your book of tropical fish handy!
Early in the day and in the evening you often have the lagoon to yourself and the best light as the sun's rays hit the sides of the fish rather than the top. Bring your underwater camera or just prepare to collect memories you will not soon forget.
NATURAL BEAUTIES:
In addition to the natural wonders of Yal Ku lagoon, the property shows off the beauties of the tropical jungle with many tropical plants and flowers – typified by the expansive bougainvillea throughout the property and the wide variety of hibiscus flowers.
For bird lovers and just lovers of nature, the Estate is the perfect backdrop for many birds (dozens and dozens of species), some common but beautiful, and some rare. You can watch the Tropical Mocking Birds, Kiskadees, and Orioles playing in the water of the pool; admire the several elegant Herons, Anhinga, Pelicans, or other sea birds in the lagoon; or look to the sky to see a Frigate (Man of War), or Turkey Vulture, or even an Osprey hunting nearby.
THE CASITAS:
The Estate has two smaller houses, or “Casitas”.
- The smaller casita is adjacent to the entrance arch and is currently used as an office (security, snorkeling vests and equipment, etc) but can also easily be converted back to housing with a kitchen/living room, separate bedroom and bathroom.
- The larger casita has a main room with a large space for a sleeping area, eating area, and sitting area along with another flat screen TV. Off the main room are both a separate full kitchen and a full bathroom. The casita can be used for additional guests or as used currently, home to permanent on-site staff.
